MUSLIMGAUZE Sound, Image and the Political Afterlife of an Archive | Expo

From 22 to 31 October, Ruq’ah and Cloud Seven present a programme dedicated to Muslimgauze, the prolific musical project of British artist Bryn Jones, whose work developed an intense and often contested relationship with Palestine, the Middle East, political imagery and sound.

The programme brings together exhibition, film, archival material, listening and conversation, approaching Muslimgauze not simply through music, but through the visual and political world that accumulated around an extraordinary body of work.

The exhibition, curated by Mohammad Zaza, presents a selection of album covers, artworks and visual material from Muslimgauze’s extensive catalogue. Through repetition, appropriation and political iconography, these works form a visual archive inseparable from the music itself.

As part of the programme, we will screen Muslimgauze: Chasing the Shadow of Bryn Jones, directed by Iara Lee, followed by a conversation around the film and the legacy of Bryn Jones.

The programme also includes Memorial for Those Who Did Not Fall in War, creating another point of reflection within the exhibition around memory, absence, violence and the ways political histories are remembered.

The exhibition opens a wider Muslimgauze programme continuing the following week at Ruq’ah, focusing on the sonic experience, political content and politics of repetition in Jones’s work, curated by:

Mohammad Zaza, a Syrian painter, illustrator and curator, For the Muslimgauze programme, Zaza curates the visual dimension of the project, bringing together a selection of album covers, artworks and archival material to examine the distinctive visual language surrounding Muslimgauze and its relationship to Palestine, political imagery and the politics of repetition.
